Mike Vick gets $100 million deal

August 29, 2011

Once again Michael Vick has received a $100 million contract from an NFL franchise. Back in 2005, Vick signed a 10-year, $130 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons. After legal troubles and jail time, Vick lost out on alot of it and it’s well documented what were the reasons were. Reborn and back on the football field, Vick has transformed himself into the Quarterback he once was believed to turn into. The Philadelphia Eagles signed Vick to a 6-year $100 million deal. Is it deserved? Will Vick play out the deal? My answer to both questions is HELL YES! Vick has been amazing on the field since his return to the game and has improved in every aspect of the Quarterback position. He did his time and has shown remorse, in addition to maturity on and off the field. Vick and the Eagles will now turn their attention to winning the Lombardi Trophy. Something the Eagles have never done. The teams last title? The 1960 NFL Championship.

Eagles ink Ronnie Brown

August 2, 2011

In the midst of a windfall of big free agent signings, the Philadelphia Eagles signed former Miami Dolphins Runnig Back Ronnie Brown. The 29-year-old Brown rushed for 4,815 yards and 36 touchdowns and caught 184 passes for 1,491 yards with Miami. He ran for 1,000 yards in 2006 and made his only Pro Bowl team in 2008. The signing of Brown is a huge gain for the Eagles who were in need of a back who could power through on short yardage situations. The 2nd pick of the 2005 draft, the former Auburn Tiger will be primed and ready to return to that Pro Bowl form of 2008 after having a lackluster 2010. The Eagles keep making big splashes, is a Super Bowl waiting in the wings?

Thank you Mike Vick

January 13, 2011

Throughout the course of the 2009-10 NFL season, Mike Vick did some amazing things on and off the football field. After all the downs he faced, Vick came back this year as the Eagles backup but shortly after the season started, became not just the starter in Philly, but a bonafide MVP candidate. The two most beautiful things about Vick’s season were his transformation from a talented athlete playing Quarterback into a solid franchise Quarterback, and the maturation process the 30 yr old Virginia native showed. Conducting himself in a respectful and professional manner all season long, Vick made every last one of his fans happy by not only providing us with more highlights, but firepower to the detractors and haters who didn’t want to see him succeed.

I could on and on about Vick’s stats this season, (1st career 3,000 yard passing season, 676 yds rushing,21:6 TD:INT ratio),and him making another Pro Bowl team,  but that’s nothing compared to Vick becoming a changed man. Whether it was his demeanor in his interviews or the crossing and pointing to the sky during pre game introductions, Vick showed and proved to many that he’s no longer the talented kid who relies on talent and doesn’t work hard anymore. Hard working, mature, and hellbent on becoming the best he can be, Vick has his head held high and is ready to take his game to the next level.

For everything that you’ve accomplished this season, Thank You Mike Vick. You are an inspiration to many of us, and show that we should never give up and never let what people say about you let us down. I personally wish you the best not just in your career, but in life.

Michael Vick to start Week 2?

September 13, 2010

It was an adventurous week 1 for the Philadelphia Eagles. After losing starting Quarterback Kevin Kolb to a concussion, Michael Vick came in the game and did what he did when he was a Pro Bowl QB with the Atlanta Falcons. With the Packers up 20-3 and holding the Eagles under 100 yards of total offense, Michael Vick came in and looked bound and determined to bring the Eagles back. Vick recorded his 10th career 100-yard rushing game of his career, threw a touchdown pass and most importantly looked like a leader on the field. Despite coming up short on a 4th and 1 play, Vick looked alot better than Kolb and with Kolb being questionable to play next week, Andy Reid may need to start Vick. Many experts, fans and myself included believed all along that Vick was the better QB but Andy Reid fell in love with Kolb after the Donovan McNabb trade. Vick has not started an NFL game since December 31, 2006, but even if Kolb is healthy I think the man to start against the Lions should be Vick. We all know Kolb wants to play but what’s best for the team may not be the best for Kolb. We will see next Sunday afternoon who leads the offense onto the field against the Detroit Lions.

49ers sign Brian Westbrook

August 16, 2010

After second year Running Back Glen Coffee retired abruptly, the San Francisco 49ers snapped up veteran Running Back Brian Westbrook. Terms of the deal were a one-year deal for $1.25 million guaranteed and $1.25 million in incentives. This signing is a very intelligent, low risk-high reward for a team that has one of the top backs in Frank Gore already atop the depth chart. Westbrook comes in on the heels of an injury shortened season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Westbrook should end up #2 on the depth chart and rookie Anthony Dixon will be in the mix for some carries as well. The 49ers are determined to get back to playoffs and this signing should help them reach their goal.

T.O. and McNabb reunion?

April 20, 2010

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5118016

As many know, Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens have alot of history. After heated times in Philadelphia, Owens was suspended and let go where he’d continue his career with the Dallas Cowboys. Well now after all the fiasco and drama, newly appointed Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb is lobbying for Owens to be signed by Washington. Coming his first full non 1,000 yard season since 1995, Owens is still one of the premier wideouts in the game and a pairing with McNabb just may be what both vets need at this point in their careers. My guess is Dan Snyder will sign Owens for two years, (Owens is 36), sit back and watch the Redskins compete for an NFC East title. I want to see it happen and i’m sure many of you do as well.

Ernie Sims dealt to Philly; Scheffler to Lions

April 19, 2010

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5113415

In a three team trade monday, linebacker Ernie Sims was sent from the lowly Detroit Lions over to the Philadelphia Eagles giving Sims an opportunity to be more noticed and giving him a shot to win. Tony Scheffler, former Broncos tight end, is now with the Lions as he went with a 7th round pick and in all this his old team only recieved a 5th round pick from Philly. In my opinion the Eagles got the best of the deal, with Detroit coming in behind them. I think Denver should have shot for more because Scheffler is a solid tight end option and probably could’ve drawn in a higher pick. The Lions now have a solid veteran at the position and the Eagles have one of the more underrated linebackers in the game. Well see how they fare with their new squads.

Artist profile: Vikk Fury

March 31, 2010

After some deliberation, I decided I would try something new and feature local SoCal artists and tie in their sports fanhood, athelete role models and amongst other things, their music. So with my first effort I decided to write about an artist that i’ve known personally for over a decade, Vikk Fury a.k.a Skyline Vikk. Vikk and I actually met in middle school playing a pickup game of basketball against each other and as time went by I learned that he was a big sports fan as well.  Vikk has been rapping for roughly 4 years and comes from Riverside, CA and is sponsored by Phlesh Klothing.

The style of Vikk’s music has changed drastically over the last 18 months. Once just a “punchline rapper,” Vikk has broadened his horizons and has come to the point where he can make songs with a high replay value. With him being a Laker fan, Vikk’s “change in his game” is similar to that of one of his favorite players in Kobe Bryant. Kobe was once known as a “slasher” in which he always took the ball to the rim and looked for the dunk. After studying the game Bryant learned he needed to expand his game in order to last and be relevant and developed a jump shot that is one of the most lethal in the NBA today. For Vikk, instead of rap battles and crowd pleasing punchlines, he developed his jump shot which was his creativity on a beat. Nowadays people want punchlines and good songs and Vikk delivers in both of those categories.

As a lifelong Eagles fan, Vikk has some similarities in his life as his team does. Being tough, gritty, hungry for victory and having a no nonsense style. This all plays out well for Vikk as in the music industry you need to have the drive to be a winner, otherwise you will find yourself getting nowhere like a person in quicksand. Being tough and thickskinned is huge to artists, especially unsigned ones like Vikk. For every supporter you will have 3 non-supporters. People dissect your music and try lowering your self esteem and you have to be tough to get through it much like Vikk does everyday.

In comparison to artists today, I would compare Vikk Fury to Young Money’s Jae Millz. Millz started his career off as a battle rapper who could kill a beat but didn’t make many songs that people enjoyed more than once or twice. Now Millz is signed to a big label and his career is taking off. Vikk is following the same path and has listed Millz as an influence on him. “Millz is someone that I look up to in the game. He’s paving the way for artists like myself and I would love to work with him sometime in my career. He’s real and doesn’t pull no punches and I live the same way and I wish more people not just artists should do the same.”

In conclusion, I believe Vikk has the potential of a lottery draft pick in the NBA. Talented with alot of hype but the need to continue to improve. Vikk knows where he wants to go with his music and will look to achieve his goals as his career progresses. Sports and music have many similarities and mix together very well. In a song called “I gets doe,” (Phenom Beezy ft/ Vikk Fury), Vikk uses sports by starting his verse with the lines, ” Wallet diabetes, pockets high cholesterol, I should bounce with Spalding for the way I ball, money on creatine, dollars on BALCO by the ballpark, steroids Barry Bonds flow..” People should keep their eyes on Vikk Fury because he’s talented, creative and has the heart of a champion.

Eagles cut RB Westbrook

February 23, 2010

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4939019

After 8 years with the Eagles, RB Brian Westbrook was released by the team Tuesday morning. In a career in which he’s put up solid numbers but had injury problems, Westbrook is widely recognized as one of the top backs of the last decade. Westbrook posted numbers of 5995 yds rushing (4.6 avg), 37 rushing TDs,3790 receiving yds with 29 tds. Westbrook will now be looking for a team to play for, more than likely a contendor, and should find work easily as long as health isn’t an issue. I could see Westbrook landing on with a few teams but my guess would be either the Steelers or Broncos.

Vick gets 2 TDs in ATL return

December 6, 2009

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4719169

In a 34-0 rout of the Falcons,Michael Vick accounted for 2 TDs in the win; his first scores since 2006. The first was a 5 yard run from the shotgun snap, the second was a 5 yard pass to tight end Brent Celek. Vick heard chants of “We want Vick!” and was happy to not only return to the Georgia Dome but to score and do to twice.
