Jordan calls Rose MVP, suprises Rose

March 10, 2011

After his Bulls defeated the Charlotte Bobacts Wednesday night, Derrick Rose received praise from the greatest of all time. Michael Jordan shocked Rose with statments he made after the game, calling Rose the MVP of the league. MJ said “MVP of the season… He deserves it. He’s playing that well. He deserves it. Without a doubt. And if he doesn’t get it, now he’ll see how I felt a lot of years.” Rose responded by saying , “That’s huge, man,(With a huge smile) when the person that you’re playing behind, all you hear about is Mike, especially in Chicago, look up to him. For him to say that, it’s unbelievable. It’s an honor and I’m speechless right now.”

Is Rose the NBA MVP right now? I think he is. Rose has the Bulls right in the mix with Boston and Miami and has improved in nearly every major statistical category this season. Rose is averaging 24.5 PTS, 8.1 AST, 4.3 REb and 1.1 STL. Derrick Rose would be only the second Bulls player to ever win the MVP, joining the great Michael Jordan.

MJ says “I wouldn’t do it”

July 19, 2010

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5391478

After last weeks free agent frenzy with the Miami Heat getting Dwayne Wade to resign and getting Chris Bosh and LeBron James, there has been many members of the media criticizing the moves. But, the man widely regarded as the greatest of all-time spoke up. Michael Jordan, winner of 6 NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls made his opinion known on Sunday. “There’s no way, with hindsight, I would’ve ever called up Larry, called up Magic and said, ‘Hey, look, let’s get together and play on one team,’ ” Jordan said after playing in a celebrity golf tournament in Nevada. The interview aired on the NBC telecast of the event. “But that’s … things are different. I can’t say that’s a bad thing. It’s an opportunity these kids have today. In all honesty, I was trying to beat those guys.”

For many years MJ has been mum on comparisons of players to himself but after all the media frenzy Jordan felt it was time to reveal his feelings. After first saying he felt Kobe was better than LeBron, Jordan made the perfect comments in my opinion. Back when Jordan was playing, the league was a tougher and more physical game. Nowadays the league is softer and the players seem to intent on getting fouls by flopping and acting. Players aren’t as competitive as well as many want to jump ship to another team a the first sign of struggle. Back in the 80′s and early 90′s, most players stuck it out and played hard night in and night out to try and improve their team. Now many want to be traded to an already successful team to get a better shot at a ring. I think the game has changed in a bad way as the players don’t want to EARN a ring and want it just handed to them because of who they are. It really has cheapened the game.

Jordan had Scottie Pippen as his running mate but it was 100% clear as to who ran the team. In Miami it’s questioned as to who will be the #1 option. Many, myself included, believe it will still be D Wade’s team. LeBron could win a many titles as he’d like, but many will say his legacy is tarnished because he wanted to join two star players in order to win a title. The closest comparison to Jordan will not be LeBron, especially after making this move to Miami. I believe the favorite for the title this year is not Miami because the Lakers are the defending champs. I believe the Boston Celtics are still a better team from top to bottom as they have geat team chemistry and we have yet to see Miami play.

Michael Jordan to appear on NBA2K11 cover

June 3, 2010

http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/plugged-in/michael-jordan-to-appear-on-video-game-cover/1400927

In video game history, there has never been an EA/2K Sports game that has had Michael Jordan as the feature athlete on the cover (he was co-featured with Tim Duncan on NBA live 2001) until now. The greatest basketball player of all-time will grace the cover of NBA2K11. Jordan has had an interesting history with video games. Due to a licensing agreement he had with the NBA, his rights weren’t part of the group licensing agreement that included all the other players—meaning his likeness didn’t automatically appear in many games while he was playing. It’s crazy to see this happen but it’s definately going to be worth the wait. The 2K franchise has been steadily improving and this may be the first of many peaks. Almost guaranteed to be the top selling basketball game of possibly all-time, 2K hit the jackpot and I applaud them for reaching out to MJ and getting him on their cover. As for EA Sports? One word: “Checkmate!”

2010 Basketball Hall of Fame class features Pippen & Malone

April 5, 2010

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5057001

The 2010 Basketball Hall of Fame class inductees have been announced and have some solid selections. Longtime Utah Jazz Forward Karl Malone, Chicago Bulls great Scottie Pippen, the original and only Dream Team (1992), Lakers owner Jerry Buss, former Celtics standout and NBA coach Dennis Johnson, who will be inducted posthumously, longtime coach Bob Hurley Sr, former WNBA standout Cynthia Cooper and Maciel “Ubiratan” Pereira, who will also be inducted posthumously. The big names of course are Malone and Pippen who are both well deserved, but in my opinion I feel the Dream Team is the biggest selection for this years class. Jordan,Bird,Magic,Robinson and the names on that team were just simply, “A Dream Team.” They dominated everyone and didn’t break a sweat doing so. I’m glad this team was voted in and if they hadn’t been it would’ve been a shame. Scottie Pippen and Karl Malone both go in a year after their running mates, Michael Jordan and John Stockton respectively, were inducted. Both guyus were among the greatest players during their careers, and fortunately for Pippen, Championship rings came along with him.

Not to throw rocks at this class as they are all deserving, but one name left out that should be included is Dennis Rodman. As some of you may remember my write up on Dennis Rodman (http://dabsportstalk.wordpress.com/2010/03/08/dennis-rodman/), I firmly believe Rodman is a Hall of Famer and should be honored as such. I think that possibly he is getting shortchanged due to the fact he didn’t post great offensive numbers but as I stated in the blog, he dominated on defense and on the rebounds as well as won five championships as a main factor of the team. Hopefully next year “The Worm” will get what many of us believe he deserved.

Dennis Rodman

March 8, 2010

After seeing Ron Artest’s Dennis Rodman-esque haircut yesterday, I decided I would write about one of my top 10 favorite NBA players off all-time,Dennis “The Worm” Rodman. I grew up in an era of greatness. Michael Jordan,Larry Bird,Magic Johnson, Shaq and many others i’ve been fortunate enough to see play. Michael Jordan was,is, and always will be my favorite player of all-time but a guy that creeps into my top 10 is Dennis Rodman. I first say Rodman play when I was a youngster, maybe 5 or 6, when he was playing for the Detroit Pistons. Rodman had the uncanny ability to rebound the ball over guys six inches+ taller than him and do it for 48 minutes every night. Sure he was a little over the top with some of his antics but you couldn’t turn a blind eye to his ability and I sure didn’t.

Known to many as “The Worm,” Rodman was a player who was wild, brash, and hard working. Michael Jordan once said, “Dennis is the greatest rbounder off all-time.” I agree with that statement 100%. Something that is little known is that Rodman was a prolific scorer in college at SE Oklahoma State, where he averaged 25.7 pts along with 15.7 rbs a game. But, when hitting the NBA, Dennis realized he needed alot of work on his pure scoring and seemed more determined to be great at one facet of the game and average at the rest. It worked to near perfection as Rodman posted amazing rebound totals in his career. Rodman grabbed 11,954 rebounds in 911 games for a career average of 13.1 a game, unheard of for a guy who played PF at 6’8 240 lbs.

One thing about Dennis, besides rebounding, was that Dennis knew how to win. A 5 time champion, (2 with Detroit,3 with Chicago), Rodman played big in the postseason and had a knack for helping his teams get the one thing that matters in sports, wins.  He played in 169 playoff games, more than some guys get in regular season careers, and posted solid numbers in the playoffs as well. While part of Detroit’s “Bad Boys”, Rodman was part-time enforcer, part-time stopper. Rodman would shut down other teams’ forwards and open up space for his teammates to score points on the offensive end. Rodman kept that same mentality of  “lockdown and rebound” his entire career and helped the Bulls win three titles with Michael Jordan,Scottie Pippen and Phil Jackson.

A career in which he is the all-time rebounds per game leader as well as rebounds per game season leader, Rodman also had many other achievements in his career. The Worm was a 7 time rebounding champ, a 7 time All-NBA Defensive selection, a 2 time All-Star,a 2 time All-NBA third team selection as well as a 2 time NBA defensive player of the year. What’s amazing is people seem to stay stuck on his off the court antics. The crazy hairstyles were only Rodman’s way of showing that he wasn’t crazy, just colorful, no pun intended. If you’ve ever heard Dennis speak, you realize that he is a very intelligent individual and is down to Earth. Ron Artest is compared to Rodman often but there is only one Rodman and I don’t see anyone matching Rodman in his accolades.

After following Rodman’s career closely, I firmly believe Dennis Rodman should be placed in the Hall of Fame. No player in history was as dominant as him on the boards, and very few brought that defensive intensity the way he did night after night. Sure he didn’t post great offensive numbers,(career best 11.6 ppg with Detroit in 87-88), but what Rodman did changed the game forever. Hopefully one day he will get enshrined but for now we can only sit back and hope he makes it in.

Allen Iverson needs “The Answer”

March 8, 2010

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4975922

NBA star Allen Iverson has had a roller coaster year. Leaving the Grizzlies,76ers, a daughter having an unspecified illness, and now it comes out that one of the greatest players in history is about to go through a divorce and has drinking and gambling problems. Well respected writer and good friend of A.I Stephen A. Smith said that Iverson will “drink himself into oblivion or gamble his life away.” Much like Charles Barkley, Dennis Rodman, Michael Jordan and many others, Iverson is doing wrong, knows it and can’t figure out how to stop it. The lifestyle for alot of NBA players is high priced and flashy and they tend to get succumbed into the high rollers ranks and it often rears it’s ugly head at them.

A 13-year vet from Georgetown, Iverson is not only a fan favorite, but a bonified star and future Hall of Famer. I believe that Iverson is trying to deal with his personal issues in the wrong way. Iverson needs someone to set him back to the right path. Iverson has always been someone you could look at and know how much he cares about his kids, and a guy like that you really want to see be there for his kids. Hopefully someone can step up and help Iverson get back to himself and in my opinion, while other say his former Georgetown coach John Thompson, I believe “Sir Charles” would be the perfect person to help. Barkley is a former All-Star and a Hall of Famer and has been through the same problems and I think he could relate to Iverson and help him with his issues. We all want to see Iverson back on the court with killer crossovers and his all-or-nothing style, but for Allen Iverson just needs “The Answer.”

My top 5 dunkers of all-time

February 4, 2010

Many in the NBA have thrown down solid dunks, but very few have stood out the way these guys have. In my deliberating, I took into consideration not only dunk contests, but also live game dunks and creativity.

#5 Desmond Mason

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1JgOTyhmRw

In his prime Desmond Mason could jump out the gym and had a high level of creativty. He shocked everyone with his dunks in the dunk contest, but also has had done many solid dunks in games.

#4 Dominique Wilkins

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyUf-9ruJi8

The Human Highlight Film was amazing when it came down to dunking. He had the best blend of power and finesse of any dunker in history. Known for his legendary showdown with Michael Jordan, Wilkins showed the world he could hang with anyone and embarrass many.

#3 Michael Jordan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8M2NgjvicA

The best player of all-time, Michael Jordan could do it all when it came to dunking. He could leap from the free throw line, rock the baby, and dunk over anyone in the game. Michael did one thing that I have never seen duplicated in the dunk contest; dribble the ball. Most guys run up and maybe bounce the ball once or twice but Jordan dribbled the ball because he said he wanted to imitate a game situation.

#2 Dr. J

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpTfb9SkKaQ

The original king of the dunk,Dr. J was the first man to really have creativity with his dunks. He could dunk on you with regularity and did some things that were unbelievable.

#1 Vince Carter

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMrPjl-927Q

Vinsanity… What more can you say? The best dunker to ever play the game, Vince has done some amazing things that may never be duplicated the way he did them. Whether it were the dunks he did in the dunk contest, dunking over a 7+ footer in the Olympics, or dunking over many in the NBA, Carter has caught the eye of many. Carter had amazing technique, finesse, and creativity and til this day can still dunk on people and make routine appearances on highlight reels.

Just missed list: Jason Richardson,Andre Iguodala,Dwight Howard,Fred Jones,Kenny Smith
